With a population of approx. 20,000, the district town of Holzminden is the largest town in the Holzminden district. The next largest towns within a radius of 15-80 km are Höxter, Paderborn, Bielefeld, Hameln, Hanover, Braunschweig, Göttingen and Kassel. The town of Holzminden can be reached via the B64, B83 and B497 federal highways. The federal highways A7, A44, A2 and A33 can be reached via the aforementioned federal highways. Holzminden is connected to the DB and NordWest-Bahn regional rail services. The distances to Paderborn and Hanover airports are 60 km and 80 km respectively.

In the past, the processing of wood and Solling sandstone played a significant role in the town, but today it is various industries and an international center of the fragrance and flavoring industry that shape the face of the town.

Holzminden has various primary and secondary schools. The street theater is free of charge and is attended by around 40,000 visitors at Whitsun. in addition to the street theater, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Corvey Monastery, which is located between Holzminden and Höxter (approx. 8 km from Holzminden) or the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the FAGUS-Werke, a globally active fire protection, measurement technology and footwear manufacturer, can also be visited.
