Iserlohn (Westphalian Iserlaun, Iserliaun, from Middle Low German îse(r)n-lô(ch) "iron forest") is a large district town in the Märkischer Kreis (administrative district of Arnsberg) in North Rhine-Westphalia and the largest town in the Märkischer Kreis and Sauerland region with a population of around 92,000. It is part of the European Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region and is classified as a medium-sized center. The first traces of settlement in the urban area are over 1000 years old, and the town was founded around 770 years ago.
