With about 20,000 inhabitants, the district town of Holzminden is the largest town in the Holzminden district. The nearest larger cities within a radius of 15-80 km are Höxter, Paderborn, Bielefeld, Hameln, Hannover, Braunschweig, Göttingen and Kassel. The city of Holzminden can be reached via the federal highways B64, B83 and B497. The federal highways A7, A44, A2 and A33 can be reached via the mentioned federal highways. Holzminden is connected to the regional traffic of the DB and NordWest-Bahn. The distances to the airports of Paderborn and Hannover are 60 km and 80 km, respectively.
In the past, the processing of wood and Sollingsandstone played a considerable role in the city, but today it is various industries and an international center of the olfactory and flavor industry that characterize the face of the city.
Holzminden has several primary and secondary schools. Further worth mentioning is the HAWK (University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim/Holzminden/Göttingen) as a state university of applied sciences, which exists since the 19th century. Culturally, Holzminden offers the International Street Theater Festival every two years, which has gained national recognition since its inception in 1991. The street theater is free of charge and is attended by about 40,000 visitors at Whitsun.In addition to the street theater can also visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Corvey Monastery, which is located between Holzminden and Höxter (about 8 km from Holzminden) or the UNESCO World Heritage Site of FAGUS-Werke, a globally active fire protection, measurement technology and shoe supplier.
