The Hanseatic and university town of Lüneburg has around 73,000 inhabitants. It is located about 50 kilometers southeast of Hamburg and is part of the Hamburg metropolitan region. The city is located on the edge of the Lüneburg Heath, named after it, on the Ilmenau river.
