The Hanseatic and university town of Lüneburg has around 73,000 inhabitants. It is located about 50 kilometers southeast of Hamburg and is part of the Hamburg metropolitan region. The city is located on the edge of the Lüneburg Heath, named after it, on the Ilmenau river. It has the status of a large independent town, is the county seat of the district of the same name and is the regional center of north-eastern Lower Saxony. Lüneburg has a highway connection (A 39).
