Velbert’s Langenberg district lies at the confluence of the Hardenberger Bach, originating in Neviges to the south, and the Deilbach, which comes from the south-east and continues via Nierenhof to Essen’s Kupferdreh district, where it joins the Ruhr. In earlier times in Langenberg, the Deilbach represented the border between the Prussian county of Mark and the Duchy of Berg, today the Rhineland and Westphalia. Three valleys begin in the centre of Langenberg.
Langenberg has three churches. The ‘Alte Kirche’ (‘old church’) in the centre, a protestant parish church, was constructed in 1726 in the style of Berg’s churches, and has an engraved pulpit beneath a sounding board constructed in 1731. Langenberg’s historical centre is one of the most attractive in the region. Its picturesque streets are still home to many half-timbered buildings dating from the 16th to 18th centuries.
