Dortmund's Hacheney district borders the city districts Hörde and Wellinghofen. Hörde was once an independent locality, becoming part of Dortmund in 1928. The district is characterised by dense residential development, with its old town featuring a compact pedestrian zone. The blast furnace's gasometer, along with the historically notable 'Hoesch' lettering, meanwhile enjoys protected status. Especially popular is the Phoenix See lake, with its nearby recreational area and restaurants. Wellinghofen lies 5km south of the city centre, and is a popular residential area. Larger developments of detached houses, along with areas of greenery, are predominantly situated in the south of the district. The Wellinghofer Amtsstraße offers a compact shopping area. The B54 main road lies to the west.
