Unterrath: Not only Rath, but also the district of Unterrath belongs to the core of the former Honschaft Rath. That is confusing. But urban development was responsible for this distinction.
When the Rath locality was to get a railway station in 1891, there was already a railway station called Rath in today’s Oberrath. For better distinction, the new station in the actually old district was then given the name Unterrath. So the railway is to blame.
In 1909 everything came together again, Unterrath with Rath and Lichtenbroich were incorporated into Düsseldorf at their own request. It is also not far from Unterrath to the airport, to the east runs the A 52, to the north (for the most part tunneled) the A 44.
Despite these transport axes, living in Unterrath is quite peaceful. Rows and semi-detached houses as well as detached single-family houses predominate, mostly older constructions. Unterrath is not "built up"; the district is loosened up by numerous small green spaces.
Unterrath is not exactly one of Düsseldorf’s younger districts in terms of age structure, yet the people of Unterrath seem to place some value on fitness. An indoor swimming pool as well as five sports fields and gymnasiums can be found in the district.
In the northwest of Unterrath, in contrast to the rest of the district, a business park with a representative appearance has been developing since 2003 on the former area of the British armed forces, with "Airport-City" in the immediate vicinity of Düsseldorf Airport.
