Living in old walls
After the war, living in bunkers was a common way to remedy the acute shortage of accommodation. The Allies had decided that all protective structures, including those for the population, were to be blown up or otherwise demolished. However, the military quickly realized that this was not feasible due to the high level of destruction in the cities. The buildings were urgently needed as storage and living quarters.
Today, this need to preserve the bunkers provides us with numerous creative ways of using them.
In order to meet living standards, extensive conversion work had to be carried out on the bunker. With the help of diamond wire saws, large openings were cut out of the two-meter-thick walls of the bunker to illuminate the interior.
The extensive gutting of the ceilings and walls created space for a new layout of the interior. In addition to a new interior, the bunker also has a "crown" with exclusive penthouse units on the roof.
The four penthouses benefit from the exposed solitary location and offer an outstanding view of Aachen.
