Zwickau is the fourth largest city in Saxony and is celebrating its 900th anniversary this year. The automobile and Robert Schumann city is celebrating the anniversary with a varied year of festivities this spring. Zwickau is the "birthplace" of the Saxon automotive industry. The more than 100-year tradition in automobile production began at the beginning of the 20th century with the founding of the Horch and Audi plants, which were continued by Auto Union in the 1930s and 1940s and by Sachsenring-Werke during the GDR era. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Volkswagen AG founded one of the largest companies in the new federal states, Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH, in what is now the Mosel district of Zwickau, which continues this automotive manufacturing tradition.
Zwickau's internationally best-known son, the Romantic composer Robert Schumann, was born in 1810. The August Horch Museum, the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau and the Robert Schumann Conservatory are cultural and educational institutions of national renown.
