Eberswalde, which originated in the 13th century, has been the district town of the Barnim district in the northeast of Brandenburg since 1990. Eberswalde is located approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Berlin’s city limits and about 22 kilometers west of the Oder (Hohenwutzen). The distance to Bad Freienwalde is approximately 17 kilometers in an east-southeasterly direction.

The Oder-Havel Canal runs immediately north of the city. In the center, the Schwärze River flows into the Finow Canal.

Eberswalde is also called the forest city, as forest areas extend all around it—the Barnim Nature Park to the south and the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve with the Plagefenn strict nature reserve to the north.

Until reunification, heavy industry (crane and pipeline construction, rolling mills, and other large companies) primarily shaped the character of the city, as evidenced by the names of some districts, such as Eisenspalterei, Kupferhammer, and Messingwerk.

On May 1, 1830, the Forestry Academy was relocated from Berlin to Eberswalde due to the extensive forests in the surrounding area. The practical instruction in forestry teaching districts and the scientific achievements of the forestry scientists working here established Eberswalde’s reputation as a forest city.

Federal highways B 167 between Neuruppin and Frankfurt (Oder) and B 168 from Eberswalde to Cottbus, as well as state road L 200 between Bernau and Angermünde, run through the city and provide good connections for local private transport.

The town is located near the A 11 Berlin-Stettin motorway. The nearest interchanges are Finowfurt and Chorin. A bypass road along the Oder-Havel Canal is planned to improve the city’s connectivity.

Eberswalde main station is the junction of the Berlin-Pasewalk-Stralsund and Eberswalde-Frankfurt/Oder railway lines. It is served by served by the following Regional-Express and Regionalbahn lines:

The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (abbreviation: HNE Eberswalde or HNEE) has a long tradition in the city. It was founded in 1830 by Friedrich Wilhelm Leopold Pfeil as an advanced forestry school. Today, students can choose from a total of 17 degree programmes in four faculties (Forest and Environment, Landscape Use and Nature Conservation, Timber Engineering, Sustainable Business).

Since the winter semester 2023/2024, the Eberswalde University of Health Professions (HGE) has offered two primary-qualifying dual degree programmes, each leading to a Bachelor of Science and a state-recognised professional qualification. These are the dual Midwifery B.Sc. degree programme and the Nursing B.Sc. degree programme.
