Zwickau is the fourth-largest city in Saxony and is celebrating its 900th anniversary as a city this year. The automobile and Robert Schumann city is celebrating the anniversary with a varied year of festivities in spring this year. Zwickau is the “birthplace” of the Saxon automobile industry. The more than one-hundred-year tradition of automobile manufacturing began at the start of the 20th century with the founding of the Horch and Audi factories, which were continued in the 1930s and 1940s by Auto Union and during the GDR era by the Sachsenring factories. After Germany’s “fall of the Berlin Wall,” Volkswagen AG founded one of the largest companies in the new federal states in the present-day Zwickau district of Mosel: Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH, which continues this automobile-manufacturing tradition.
In 1810, Robert Schumann, the internationally best-known son of the city and a Romantic composer, was born in Zwickau. The August Horch Museum, the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau, and the Robert Schumann Conservatory are cultural and educational institutions known beyond the region.
