Zwickau is the fourth-largest city in Saxony and is celebrating 900 years as a city this year. The automobile and Robert Schumann city is celebrating the anniversary with a varied program of events in the spring of this year. Zwickau is the "birthplace" of the Saxon automobile industry. The more than hundred-year tradition of automobile manufacturing began at the beginning of the 20th century with the founding of the Horch and Audi factories, continued in the 1930s and 1940s by Auto Union and during the GDR era by the Sachsenring factories. After the "fall of the Wall" in Germany, Volkswagen AG founded one of the largest companies in the new federal states in the present-day Zwickau district of Mosel: Volkswagen Sachsen GmbH, which continues this automobile manufacturing tradition.
The internationally best-known son of the city, the Romantic composer Robert Schumann, was born in Zwickau in 1810. The August Horch Museum, West Saxon University of Applied Sciences Zwickau and the Robert Schumann Conservatory are cultural and educational institutions known throughout the region.
