Oberbilk, where people have always felt more drawn to the city center than to Bilk, is undergoing major structural change. The historic center of the district, Oberbilker Markt, has changed its face enormously. Old industrial plants, which once made it a typical Wilhelminian-style and working-class district, have disappeared. Now the subway provides a fast connection to the city center and more and more service providers are settling here. Around the Haus der Wirtschaft, Düsseldorf is reminiscent of its twin cities. The streets are named after Moscow, Warsaw, Haifa and Reading, subway stations are reminiscent of Moscow and Warsaw and a bust of Pushkin donated by the twin city of Moscow is the first sculpture in the area. In large parts, however, the character of the working-class district has been preserved. Immigrants from other countries who came here for work have created a multicultural environment in the best sense of the word. There is a wide range of good international cuisine and a large selection of foreign food markets.
