The local recreation area of Bad Erna is located about 4 km south of Doberlug-Kirchhain in the district of Elbe-Elster, Brandenburg, within the Niederlausitzer Heidelandschaft Nature Park. The West Pond, also known as Bad Erna - West Pond, is a central part of this area and was created from a former lignite open-cast mine.
Originally, the ponds of the Bad Erna local recreation area were formed as residual pits of an old lignite open-cast mine in which coal was mined from 1873 to 1920. After mining ceased, the pits filled with groundwater and have been used as bathing lakes since 1927. Today, the area includes several artificially created lakes, including the Island Pond, the West Pond, the Blue Lake, the Perch Pond, and the French Pond.
The West Pond, with an area of about 7.6 hectares, offers a variety of leisure activities such as swimming, hiking, and nature observation. The area is surrounded by forest and has facilities such as a forest tavern, idyllically located on the bathing lake and providing visitors with food and drinks. A children's playground with a pirate ship and locomotive invites especially young guests to play and run around.
The region is easily accessible via the town of Doberlug-Kirchhain and offers visitors a retreat in the midst of nature, ideal for relaxation and leisure activities.
