Korbach, a former Hanseatic town more than 1000 years old, is the largest town and district capital of the Waldeck-Frankenberg district and is located on the northeastern edge of the Rhenish Slate Mountains.

Korbach lies on the federal highways 251 (Kassel-Brilon) and 252 (Marburg-Paderborn), which briefly intersect on the Korbach bypass. There is no direct connection to the freeway network in the town area; the nearest freeway junctions are on the A 44 at Diemelstadt and Zierenberg, each about 30 km away. The town is also connected to Medebach and Diemelsee via state roads.

Rhena, a village of 590 souls, is a district of the district and Hanseatic town of Korbach and is located in the western part of northern Hesse in wooded and hilly northeastern foothills of the Rothaar Mountains. It is located in the Diemelsee Nature Park about 5.5 km (as the crow flies) west-northwest of the core city of Korbach.
