Around 1,300 inhabitants currently live in tranquil Gieselwerder. In 2020, the small town was designated as the administrative seat of the municipality of Wesertal. Administratively, the municipality of Wesertal belongs to the North Hessian district of Kassel.

Gieselwerder is idyllically situated in the upper Weser Valley between Hannoversch Münden and the highly popular tourist destination of Bad Karlshafen. Nestled between the Bramwald recreational area and the Reinhardswald, residents enjoy a very relaxed lifestyle surrounded by meadows and fields and directly on the Weser.

A house with history – and character

Anyone with a passion for historic buildings will not only find what they are looking for here, but will be touched: In 1814, still in the shadow of the Napoleonic era, Christian Henne and his wife Anna Maria, née Deppen, had this imposing cross-passage house built. The inscription on the original preserved gate beam is not only a historical document, but also a moving declaration:

“In the year 1814, on 26 May, under God’s guidance, this house was built by Christian Henne and Anna Maria Henne, née Deppen.”

Since then, this house has seen generations come and go – yet it has lost none of its essence. It was extended as early as the 19th century: The attached side extension in structural half-timbering presumably once served as a utility area – this part of the building, too, blends harmoniously into the overall appearance.

The property is located in the middle of Gieselwerder’s historic town centre, opposite the old castle site with today’s town hall building and church – a neighbourhood characterised by established culture and rural modesty.

It is not without reason that this building was included in the list of cultural heritage monuments: It is a typical cross-passage house with neoclassical half-timbering, a simple but regular wall-plate construction, supplemented by braces on the intermediate and corner posts as well as a surrounding joist structure. Particularly striking is the original gate area with its basket-handle-arched gate frame, which is still crowned by a Classical-style cap cornice.

This house is more than a building – it is a silent witness to time and a piece of lived history. Those who feel connected to places like this will find a treasure that has become rare.
