Altkünkendorf is one of 23 districts of the town of Angermünde in the southeast of the Uckermark, approximately one hour by car or train from Berlin. The village, with approx. 160 inhabitants, is located in the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve, amid a hilly landscape shaped by the Ice Age, with beech forests, open fields, lakes and kettle holes.
Angermünde, nine kilometres away, offers a railway connection, shopping facilities, restaurants, schools and more. In summer, a bus runs there every hour during the day.
The largely intact natural surroundings can be found all around the village. The Grumsin, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Ancient Beech Forests of Europe”, is located in the immediate vicinity of the village—a forest that is allowed to develop undisturbed into a primeval forest without human intervention. The other forests, as well as the fields and meadows lined with hedges, also invite you to take wonderful walks.
At the edge of Altkünkendorf lies Lake Heiligensee with a beautiful bathing area. The larger Lake Wolletz can be reached on foot in 15 minutes.
