The market town of Niederaula is located in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district in northeastern Hesse, between the foothills of the Rhön, Vogelsberg and Knüll mountains.
The town borders the municipality of Kirchheim and the city of Bad Hersfeld to the north, the municipality of Hauneck to the east, the municipality of Haunetal (all in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district) and the city of Schlitz (in the Vogelsberg district) to the south, and the municipality of Breitenbach am Herzberg (in the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district) to the west.
Due to its geographical location and favorable transport connections, the wooded town of Niederaula has developed into a logistics center in Germany, as it is now located relatively centrally in Germany following the opening of the former inner-German border. Several logistics service providers have established central locations in Niederaula for transshipping their freight.
The municipality is located directly at the Kirchheimer and Hattenbacher Dreieck motorway interchanges. Consequently, the A 4, A 5 and A 7 motorways are in the immediate vicinity.
