Anyone who bears the title “Emperor” in their name must be something special. And indeed, Kaiserswerth, Düsseldorf’s oldest district with the richest traditions, has much to offer. Its defensive past can still be read in the layout of the town today. One of the oldest Rhine crossings of the Middle Ages was located here.
Arms of the Rhine encircled the settlement, which lay on an island (“Werth”). The Franks used the site as a base for their conquests, and English monks for their mission east of the Rhine.
The collegiate church from the 13th century bears witness to this. It houses the magnificent reliquary (12th/13th century) containing the bones of Saint Suitbertus. In the 8th century, the English Benedictine monk carried out missionary work here on the island of “Rhinhusen” (Kaiserswerth was later also called “Suitbertuswerth”) and founded a first church and monastery.
The imposing ruins of the Imperial Palace, rising up to 15 meters high, also recall the town’s great past. It was established by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in the 12th century and dominated the river and the region for centuries. The unique Romanesque house, with no other like it far and wide, is another attraction.
The small-town Lower Rhine market square, with its numerous historic buildings, is a tourist attraction. The motherhouse of the deaconesses here also commemorates a great social achievement. In 1836, the Protestant pastor Theodor Fliedner founded the Deaconess Institution; its most prominent pupil was Florence Nightingale.
There is plenty of good shopping—and dining—around Kaiserswerth Market. Everything is available, from gourmet restaurants to snack stands.
