Jemgum is a municipality in East Frisia and belongs to the district of Leer in Lower Saxony. It is located in the Rheiderland, one of the four historical regions of the district of Leer. With 3506 inhabitants, Jemgum is the smallest single municipality in the district of Leer by population and also the smallest single municipality on the East Frisian mainland.
In Jemgum, the Bentumersiel excavation site is one of the few larger finds of Roman military equipment in northern Germany. Located on the lower reaches of the Ems in its river marshes, individual places in the municipality have already been documented as permanent settlements in the High Middle Ages. In the 16th century, the present-day main town of Jemgum was the scene of two battles: the one in 1533 in the course of the Geldrian Feud, important for East Frisia, and the one in 1568 as part of the Dutch War of Independence.
