Eberswalde, founded in the 13th century, has been the district town of the Barnim district in the northeast of the state of Brandenburg since 1990. Eberswalde is located about 40 kilometers northeast of the Berlin city limits and about 22 kilometers west of the Oder River (Hohenwutzen). The distance to Bad Freienwalde is approximately 17 kilometers in an east-southeasterly direction.

The Oder-Havel Canal runs directly north of the city. In the center, the river Schwärze flows into the Finow Canal.

Eberswalde is also called the Forest City, because forest areas extend all around - to the south the Barnim Nature Park, to the north the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve with the total reserve Plagefenn.

Until the reunification, heavy industry mainly shaped the character of the town (crane and pipeline construction, rolling mills and other large industrial plants), as is also reflected in the names of some districts, such as Eisenspalterei, Kupferhammer and Messingwerk.

Alongside Eberswalde's development as an industrial location, the town also developed a reputation as a spa and air-curort as well as a forest town. A medicinal spring was operated from 1750. There were numerous attempts to use the iron-containing springs for spa and bathing operations. From 1795, the creation of promenades and ornamental grounds also served the profile of a spa and recreational resort. The bathing operations were discontinued in 1898 due to unprofitability, and Eberswalde lost its reputation as a spa town. However, it remained an air-curort.

On 1 May 1830, due to the extensive surrounding forests, the Forestry Academy was relocated from Berlin to Eberswalde. The practice-oriented instruction in the forestry teaching areas and the scientific achievements of the forestry scientists working here established Eberswalde's reputation as a forest town.

The federal roads B 167 between Neuruppin and Frankfurt (Oder) as well as B 168 from Eberswalde to Cottbus, and also the state road L 200 between Bernau and Angermünde, run through the town and ensure good access for individual local transport.

The town is located near the A 11 Berlin-Stettin. The nearest interchanges are Finowfurt and Chorin. A connection to the town via a bypass road along the Oder-Havel Canal is planned.

Eberswalde main station is an intersection of the railway lines Berlin-Pasewalk-Stralsund and Eberswalde-Frankfurt/Oder. It is served by the following Regional Express and Regional Bahn lines:

ICE and IC trains stop at the station on the Stralsund-Berlin route. While long-distance passenger traffic and connections to Berlin are operated by DB Regio Nordost, traffic on the branch lines is handled by Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn (NEB).

In Eberswalde there are five primary schools and two secondary schools, two grammar schools and a upper secondary center. In addition, there are several privately run schools.

The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (abbreviation: HNE Eberswalde or HNEE) has a long tradition in the city. It was founded in 1830 as the Higher Forestry Training Institute by Friedrich Wilhelm Leopold Pfeil. Today, students from four departments (Forest and Environment, Landscape Management and Nature Conservation, Wood Engineering, Sustainable Business) can choose from a total of 17 degree programs.

The Eberswalde University of Applied Health Sciences (HGE) has offered two primary qualification dual degree programs since the winter semester 2023/2024, each leading to a Bachelor of Science and a state-recognized professional qualification. These are, on the one hand, the dual degree program Midwifery B.Sc. and the degree program Nursing B.Sc.
