The Kolumbussee is the namesake and scenic focal point of the site. The body of water was created after local quartzite extraction ceased in the early 1930s and the former quarry filled with water. The lake covers approximately 11,000 m² and reaches a depth of around 30 meters. A small beach and shore area provides direct access to the water. Together with the tall trees, natural shoreline areas, and surrounding forest paths, this creates a pronounced recreational quality that particularly appeals to campers seeking peace and quiet, nature-oriented couples, families, hikers, and cycle tourists.
Plötzky is now known as the center of the Schönebeck Elbaue local recreation area. The village is surrounded by extensive forest areas and numerous former quarry lakes in the immediate surroundings. A well-developed network of cycle paths connects Plötzky with Pretzien and Ranies. In addition, a planet trail as well as numerous other hiking and recreational paths invite visitors to discover the attractive landscape. Informative display boards provide interesting facts about nature, history and the region. The combination of forest, water and easily accessible excursion destinations offers diverse opportunities for hiking, cycling, swimming, observing nature and relaxing.
The campsite belongs to the municipal area of Schönebeck (Elbe), a traditional salt town directly on the Elbe. The town combines a historic old town, established local amenities and a diverse range of leisure and cultural activities. The landmark on the banks of the Elbe is the 16-metre-high “Salt Flower”, whose design commemorates the history of salt extraction and salt trading as well as former shipping on the Elbe. The historic market, the Salt Tower, former salt warehouses and the landing stage are located nearby.
The Schönebeck district of Bad Salzelmen has particular tourist importance. Germany’s first brine spa was opened there in 1802. The historic spa park with its impressive graduation works, the brine spa, the Lindenbad, the Salzland Museum and other health, wellness and cultural offerings complement the campsite’s nature-oriented character with an attractive bad-weather and year-round offering. Bad Salzelmen can look back on more than 800 years of salt extraction and is still a state-recognized spa town today.
The Elbe also significantly expands the site’s tourism potential. The largely natural river course with floodplain forests, oxbow lakes, flood channels and sandbanks offers opportunities for cycling, hiking, water touring and observing waterfowl and Elbe beavers. The nationally renowned Elbe Cycle Route provides access to Schönebeck and the districts east of the Elbe. From Plötzky, round trips can be taken via Pretzien, Ranies, the Pretzien Weir and the Schönebeck Elbe floodplains. The historic Pretzien Weir is also an important technical monument and remains part of the flood protection system for Schönebeck and Magdeburg.
The site layout combines two economically interesting usage segments.
