Eberswalde, founded in the 13th century, has been the district town of the Barnim district in the northeast of the state of Brandenburg since 1990. Eberswalde is located about 40 kilometers northeast of the Berlin city limits and about 22 kilometers west of the Oder (Hohenwutzen). The distance to Bad Freienwalde is approximately 17 kilometers in an east-southeast direction.

The Oder-Havel Canal runs immediately north of the city. In the center, the river Schwärze flows into the Finow Canal.

Eberswalde is also called the Forest City, because forest areas extend all around - to the south the Barnim Nature Park, to the north the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve with the Plagefenn strict nature reserve.

Until the fall of the Wall, heavy industry mainly determined the character of the city (crane and pipeline construction, rolling mills and other large enterprises), which is also reflected in the names of some districts, such as Eisenspalterei, Kupferhammer and Messingwerk.

In addition to the development of Eberswalde as an industrial location, the city's reputation as a spa and health resort as well as a forest city took shape. From 1750, a healing spring was operated. There were numerous attempts to use the iron-rich springs for a spa and Bäderbetrieb to use. The creation of promenades and ornamental grounds from 1795 onward also served the profile of a spa and health resort. The bathing operation was discontinued in 1898 because it was unprofitable, and Eberswalde lost its reputation as a spa town. However, it remained a climatic health resort.

On May 1, 1830, the Forestry Academy was relocated from Berlin to Eberswalde because of the extensive forests in the surrounding area. The practice-oriented teaching in the forestry training areas and the scientific achievements of the forestry scientists working here established Eberswalde's reputation as a forest city.

Federal highways B 167 between Neuruppin and Frankfurt (Oder) and B 168 from Eberswalde to Cottbus as well as state road L 200 between Bernau and Angermünde run through the city and provide a good connection for individual local transport.

The town is near the A 11 Berlin-Stettin. The nearest interchanges are Finowfurt and Chorin. A connection to the city with a bypass road along the Oder-Havel Canal is planned.

Eberswalde Central Station is the junction of the railway lines Berlin-Pasewalk-Stralsund and Eberswalde-Frankfurt/Oder. It is served by the following Regional Express and Regional Bahn lines:

ICE and IC trains stop at the station on the Stralsund-Berlin line. While long-distance passenger transport and connections to Berlin are operated by DB Regio Nordost, traffic on the branch lines is handled by Niederbarnimer Eisenbahn (NEB).

There are five primary schools and two secondary schools, two grammar schools and a vocational upper secondary center in Eberswalde. In addition, there are several privately run schools.

The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (abbreviation: HNE Eberswalde or HNEE) has a long tradition in the city. It was founded in 1830 as the Higher Forestry Training Institute by Friedrich Wilhelm Leopold Pfeil. Today, students can choose from a total of 17 degree programs in four departments (Forest and Environment, Landscape Use and Nature Conservation, Wood Engineering, Sustainable Economy).

The Eberswalde University of Health Professions (HGE) has been offering twoprimary qualifying dual degree programs, each leading to a Bachelor of Science and a state-recognized vocational qualification. These include the dual degree program Midwifery B.Sc. as well as the Nursing B.Sc. program.
