The town of Nidderau is located on the northeastern edge of the Rhine-Main region in the Hessian Main-Kinzig district.
Nidderau is the fifth-largest town in the Main-Kinzig district.
The town lies in the southern Wetterau and borders on the southwestern foothills of the Vogelsberg, but administratively still belongs to the Main-Kinzig district (in the 1970s Hanau district). The river Nidder gave the town its name. In 2007 (as already in 2004 and 2005), Nidderau was the sunniest place in Hesse with 1883 hours of sunshine.
Nidderau borders the town of Karben to the west, the town of Niddatal to the northwest, the municipality of Altenstadt (all Wetterau district) to the north, the municipalities of Limeshain (Wetterau district) and Hammersbach to the east, the town of Bruchköbel to the south, and the municipality of Schöneck to the southwest.
Since the merger of the core districts of Windecken and Heldenbergen, there had been a sparsely populated area between the districts, so the desire for a new town center soon arose. After long discussions in the committees and in public, it was decided to develop an area of approx. 13 hectares west of Konrad-Adenauer-Allee as the new town center. An approximately 11,000 square meter shopping and service center with a large parking lot was built under the name "Nidderforum". The sales area is 6000 square meters. A striking focal point of the central commercial area is an elevated restaurant with a view as far as Frankfurt. The surrounding additional areas are approved for single-family home and rental apartment construction with ecological standards. Construction of the center began in May 2015, and the Nidderforum opened on 2 June 2016.
The federal roads 45 and 521 intersect in Nidderau. A western bypass for the core district of Heldenbergen/Windecken was built from 2009 to 2015, relieving the town of through traffic, especially in the north-south direction. The entire opening of the approximately 8.3 kilometer long route took place at the end of June 2015.
The most important bus line is line 562, which connects Nidderau and its districts with Hanau. Massive protests followed the timetable change in 2009, which greatly extended the travel time, becauseIn addition, the city bus line MKK-45 also serves the area better, providing better access to the Heldenbergen district.
Within the city area of Nidderau, two railway lines run, briefly join here and then split again. With Nidderau station, there is a station on the Friedberg-Hanau railway line and on the Niddertalbahn from Bad Vilbel to Glauburg-Stockheim. There are connections to Frankfurt am Main, Hanau, Friedberg (Hessen) and Stockheim (Glauburg) in the Vogelsberg. In addition, there are the three stops Nidderau-Windecken and Nidderau-Eichen on the Niddertalbahn as well as Ostheim (Kr Hanau) on the Friedberg-Hanau railway line.
The Bahnradweg Hessen cycling route runs through the districts of Windecken and Eichen. It follows former railway tracks for approx. 250 km through the Vogelsberg and the Rhön.
In the city of Nidderau there are four primary schools, the Ostheim primary school, the Albert-Schweitzer-Schule Nidderau in the Heldenbergen district, the Kurt Schumacher-Schule in Windecken and the Paul Maar-Schule in Eichen. In addition, with the Johann Hinrich Wichern-Schule in the Ostheim district there is a school for learning support and a school for speech therapy, and in Heldenbergen the Bertha von Suttner-Schule, an integrated comprehensive school for grades 5 to 10.
