Under the pergola, breakfast is enjoyed in the morning sun, with views across the meadow to Lake Grimnitz. Those who are out early can see deer standing in the grass and storks striding over from the neighboring meadow.

The house is an individually designed bungalow from 2022, built by Skandima Holzhäuser using timber-frame construction according to the owners’ own design — not ordered from a catalog. A façade made of Siberian larch, now silver-gray. Turquoise-blue window frames, a round window in the gable. And no tiles on the pitched roof, but sedum: an extensively greened roof that blooms in summer.

Inside, everything opens onto one room. Just under 49 m² for living, dining and cooking, open up to the ridge, with exposed beams beneath the white-paneled ceiling. Behind it, things become quiet: a bedroom with a walk-in dressing room and direct access to the bathroom with bathtub, a children’s or study room, a second bathroom with shower and toilet, and a separate utility room. Everything on one level, no staircase, no step — a floor plan that works just as well for a young family as for two people who no longer want to think about stairs.

The garden has been cultivated over the years rather than bought: dry-stone walls made of natural stone, perennial beds, fruit trees, raised beds and a round fire pit with a natural-stone surround. Two terraces totaling around 40 m², the large one under a pergola for the morning, the narrow one along the long side for the evening sun. Beyond it begins the adjoining meadow of around 2,500 m², which the development plan does not designate as building land. Together with the house plot, that makes 3,690 m² of land of our own.

Technology: Gas central heating from 2022, underfloor heating throughout the house, solar thermal system for hot-water heating, plus a wood-burning stove in the living area.

Location details

Althüttendorf is located in the Barnim district, right in the middle of the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve — where the Uckermark begins and the Schorfheide has not yet ended. The house stands on the edge of the village; toward the meadow and lake, there is no further development, but landscape.

Lake Grimnitz lies to the north and can be seen from the living room. The public sandy beach is 500 meters away. Lake Werbellin — Brandenburg’s second-deepest lake after Lake Stechlin — is a short drive south.

The daycare center is in the village. Everything else is three kilometers away in Joachimsthal: supermarket, school, bank and gas station. The A 11 has its exit near Joachimsthal, and Alt Hüttendorf railway station is on the RB 63 line toward Eberswalde. Berlin is about an hour away by car.

Anyone familiar with the area knows Chorin Abbey with its summer concerts, Joachimsthal Imperial Railway Station and the cycle paths around the lakes. Anyone who does not know it yet has plenty to discover.
