The Buchmühle is centrally located in Bergisch Gladbach, directly alongside the Strunde stream, just a few minutes’ walk from the town hall. The listed half-timbered house from the 17th/18th century, together with the brick extension from 1840 and modern glass and loft elements, forms an architecturally appealing ensemble of buildings. Parts of the timber framing have been dendrochronologically dated to around 350 years old – it originated as a fruit mill that already belonged to the Gladbach Fronhof in the 18th century.
After more than 33 years as a creative passion project, the owners – architects specializing in listed buildings and half-timbered structures – would like to pass the Buchmühle into new hands.
Purchased and completely renovated in 1993, it served from 2012 to 2022 as a showroom for “bauoffice”, a cooperation of engineers and tradespeople, and was completely modernized from 2018 to 2022 and converted into an exclusive venue with café, event and conference rooms.

Building description of the materials used and their thicknesses:
The foundations consist of rubble stone/brick masonry/concrete.
The load-bearing external masonry consists of brick, approximately 50 cm thick. In the area of the brick masonry, a horizontal damp-proof course with paraffin was installed in 1994.
The half-timbered external walls are largely infilled and have interior, diffusion-open thermal insulation. The extension consists of a glass-and-wood structure with a mono-pitch green roof.
The partition walls are predominantly half-timbered; otherwise, masonry or drywall. The ceiling of the crawl-space basement in the present-day café room is a masonry vault.
The floor ceilings are plastered wooden ceilings, partly Cologne ceilings (stucco). A roof structure over the south-west wing was newly constructed in 1994. It has full-rafter insulation, 20 cm thick, made of cellulose. The roof structure over the south-east wing has been doubled and also has full-rafter insulation. The roofs have been fully developed and provide additional lighting through long strips of glazing and skylights. The roof tiles are interlocking clay tiles (appropriate for a listed building).
Three chimneys extend above the roof and are clad with natural slate. The historic main staircase is made of wood; the two connecting staircases within the units are modern steel staircases. The staircase in the experience room leads to a steel-and-glass bridge connecting two galleries. The floors on the ground floor are made of natural slate and wooden floorboards. On the upper floor and attic floor, they are also made of oak/ash. The interior doors are made of wood, including 4 fire doors, some with glazing. One T30 door is made of steel. The windows are heritage-appropriate oak wooden mullioned windows on the ground floor with shutters. The windows in the extension are double-glazed. On the north side, there are two folding-door systems that can be opened across the entire frontage.

A place with history.
The Buchmühle is one of Bergisch Gladbach’s oldest buildings. As part of a former manorial estate, it made use of the water power of the Strunde from an early date – initially as a grain mill, later as a scutching mill for processing flax.
It was first mentioned in documents in 1699. Over the course of its history, it served, among other things, as a mill, inn, butcher’s shop, residence and music school.
After the music school moved out, architects Lisa Wendling and Oliver Weirich acquired the building and comprehensively renovated it in close cooperation with the state conservation authorities.
Since 2015, Dieter Bille and Lisa Wendling have operated the Buchmühle as a wedding venue, café, seminar centre and cultural venue.
Today, the building ensemble consists of three harmoniously connected structures:
•a historic half-timbered house from the 18th century,
•a brick building dating from around 1840, and
•a modern timber-and-glass extension with a green roof from 1994.

The Buchmühle building ensemble is one of the oldest buildings in the city of Bergisch Gladbach and is a listed monument. Since 1993, it has been owned by an architect specialising in the renovation of half-timbered houses and listed monuments. Through numerous renovations, the building has been preserved in accordance with heritage requirements, modernised and furnished to a high standard in all rooms over the past 30 years.
Through the implementation of the Regionale 2010 measures, the Buchmühle was newly integrated into an overall urban development concept in 2013. The uncovering of the Strunde stream in the adjacent park and the redesign of the pedestrian zone extending to the historic building demonstrate the high recreational value as well as the close connection to the central Rathausplatz with its registry office. The redesign of Laurentius Straße, with an expanded cycle path and enlarged pedestrian area, also provides the Buchmühle with an attractive connection to further shops and restaurants to the north-west.

The detached half-timbered house ensemble is located in the centre of Bergisch Gladbach, 200 m from the Rathausplatz, next to St. Laurentius Church with a public car park.
To the north of the building, alongside the private gardens, there is a newly designed public park offering a high recreational value. An exposed stream with seating and activity areas, a children’s playground, a boules court, and the adjoining listed rose garden with fountain invite visitors to linger. Opposite the Buchmühle, the adult education centre offers its programmes, as does the adjoining row of shops extending to Hauptstraße, which has been developed as a pedestrian zone.
On the north-west side, the Buchmühle is connected to Laurentius-Straße, which was redesigned and expanded in 2025/2026. This connection has also become more attractive due to more space for pedestrians with seating areas and green spaces, as well as an emphasis on cycling.
To the east of the adult education centre there is an undeveloped plot which is to be built up with residential and commercial buildings. Plans exist here for an age-appropriate, multigenerational building with a café and library (see coloured site plan).
The Buchmühle is located 200 m from Konrad–Adenauer-Platz (Rathausplatz). Here, the upper and lower pedestrian zones of Hauptstraße meet at a central, large square enclosed by a fountain and historic buildings. The town hall, St. Laurentius Church, the Bergische Löwe cultural centre, the Villa Zanders municipal museum and Wilhelminian-era buildings form the backdrop for regular large events such as the fair, trade fairs, town festival, city run, Christmas market and the popular weekly market held twice a week. Shops of all kinds, banks, cafés, snack bars and restaurants are represented here.
At the end of 2025, Bergisch Gladbach had approx. 114,000 inhabitants and is therefore a steadily growing large city. Bergisch Gladbach is located 15 km from Cologne.
By S-Bahn, the journey to Cologne takes 20 minutes. The construction of a second track is planned. The bus station is located directly next to the terminus of the S-Bahn.
All types of schools are represented in Bergisch Gladbach, as well as a high number of kindergartens and day-care centres.
