The Kiel Canal (NOK) is today the most frequently navigated artificial sea shipping route in the world, yet its roots reach far back into the 19th century. As early as 1784, the historic Eider Canal linked the two seas, but with the onset of industrialization and ever-larger steamships it quickly reached the limits of its capacity. For strategic, military, and economic reasons, the German Empire under Wilhelm I and Reich Chancellor Otto von Bismarck pressed for a modern new construction. The aim: the German navy was to be able to be redeployed quickly, and merchant shipping was to be spared the dangerous, stormy detour around the Danish peninsula (Skagerrak).
In 1887 the foundation stone was laid. What followed was one of the most gigantic infrastructure projects of the time. In just eight years of construction, at times up to 8,900 workers moved unimaginable masses of earth across Schleswig-Holstein, until the canal was finally ceremoniously opened on June 21, 1895, by Kaiser Wilhelm II and christened the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal. Just a few years later, between 1907 and 1914, the waterway had to be massively widened and deepened once more in the course of the maritime arms race in order to make room for the new, enormous capital ships.
In the midst of this heyday of global trade and the rapid growth of the waterway, the city of Kiel built the old harbor master's office in the North Harbor in 1927. Designed as a functional and at the same time representative building, the Kiel city coat of arms incorporated into the portal above the entrance still testifies today to the historical significance of this place. After the Second World War, in 1948, the historic shipping route received its present name: Nord-Ostsee-Kanal (international: Kiel Canal). As one of the very few private waterfront properties, this listed house has since been a silent witness to contemporary history – and to this day offers an unobstructed direct view of the roughly 30,000 ships that pass by here year after year within reach, only a few meters away, directly along the sheet-pile wall that borders the property. The view of the canal with its countless ships is fascinating at every season and time of day.
